She had a secret, but it eventually became public.
She was a passionate and articulate supporter of a St. Louis-area organization known for opposing drunk driving. We were all impressed with her--I suppose that’s why she was featured in the public service announcement being filmed where I worked at the time.
The organization couldn’t have found a better spokesperson. Or so I thought.
I found out a few days later via newspaper headlines that she also ran a large prostitution ring in the area.
She had a secret, but it eventually became public.
Like it or not, it’s the same with us. According to the Bible, our secret sins will eventually be exposed. At the very least they will be made known when we stand before the Lord someday.
“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”1
Christians, non-Christians, we’ll all stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ.2
Think about it: Whatever embarrassing thing we may think about or do that no one else knows about will eventually be revealed by God. And while I’m not sure anybody else will be around to hear about it, it’s bad enough that the Lord will know. Big-time ugh.
But if that’s not sobering enough, it’s my observation that many times our secret sins are made public before the Judgment Seat of Christ.
“You may be sure that your sin will find you out.”3
Taken in context, the above verse doesn’t prove that our secrets will be exposed in this life. Yet, it’s my observations that they frequently are. And if and when it happens the result is very public embarrassment and humiliation. Just ask Tiger Woods.
What’s my point?
If you’ve got a secret sin going on then confess it to God, repent of it and be done with it. At the very least it’ll be revealed when you stand before the Lord someday. And it’s possible—perhaps quite possible—that it’ll come out before then. As in any day now.
Are you cringing at the thought? Then deal with it. Today.
“You may be sure that your sin will find you out.”
