the window seat

Frosted windows and howling winds,

I am so cold, so cold, so cold inside.

Yet the sun penetrates both body and soul,

Rescued, rescued, yet again.

Time stands still and deafening silence,

I am so empty, so empty, so empty inside.

Yet my purring kitty reminds me of a friendship,

Dark thoughts and weighty failures,

I am so sad, so sad, so sad inside.

Yet the distant sound of birds is music to my ears,

Curtains lifted and a new day dawns,

I am so hopeful, so hopeful, so hopeful inside.

For God’s creation is my constant companion,

Rescued, rescued, yet again.

unseen companion

I took a walk with the Lord this morning and it was awesome.

Sure, the people who saw me at the park would tell you I was alone, but I know better. The Lord was in the rustling of the leaves, the screeching of the blue jays, and the chirping of the squirrels.

While I love to study Scripture, I feel closest to our great God when I’m outside enjoying what He created. Because of that, I walk a mile-plus every day, regardless of the weather. You see, I just have to get outside. On the rare days when I can’t or don’t I feel empty and deprived.

Even as a kid, one of the first places I went after passing my driver’s test was to the park. While many kids would have gone to Steak and Shake or a friend’s house, I chose the park. Even then I was a nature lover. It’s apparently in my DNA.

I remember lying on my back watching the clouds pass slowly overhead. My imagination had a feast that day. Later, I walked ever-so-carefully on large rocks that jutted out into the Missouri River. Sitting precariously on the last boulder, I took my shoes and socks off and dangled my feet in the water as it rushed by.

It was a positively wonderful day. But then, any day that’s spent outside enjoying what God has created is a wonderful day.

After all, there’s no one like the Lord. No one.

“I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.”1

Has it been awhile seen you’ve experienced the God described in that verse? Do you feel far away from your heavenly Father right now?

If so, why not take a walk outside today? Somewhere with trees, birds and water. Go alone, but know that you’re not really alone.

You see, wherever you go, the Lord will be there. In the rustling of the leaves, in the screeching of Blue Jays, and the chirping of squirrels.

Talk a walk outside today with the Lord. It’ll be awesome.
